Today was my first visit to Emmanuel Faith Community Church. I attended the 11AM Resonance service which has a live band a video feed of the sermon. The music was uplifting and when one of the musicians spoke to the crowd I felt that he was sincere and really connected to his words.

The sermon was about a passage in Matthew during Passion Week where Jesus is talking to his disciples about the end times. (The original passage in Mark actually refers to the destruction of the temple of Jerusalem; in Matthew it is revised to include an apocalyptic message about the end of the world.) The pastor selected a few excerpts from the long passage to emphasize that we should hate our sin, that the devil loves killing people, and that if we cling to material possessions we're going to lose our lives.

To be fair, I don't know if this sermon is representative of this pastor's/church's message. However, he did mention that last week's sermon was about the anti-Christ, so that gives some indication.

I found the church's stated mission, "Honoring God by living like Jesus," to be a bit misleading. In my reading of the gospels, Jesus was a compassionate and intelligent man who reached out to people who were otherwise regarded as "sinners." He focused on the good in them, and implored people not to judge each other, but to forgive and (above all) to LOVE.

I'm sure that the pastor's focus on Satan's power and our innate sinfulness will appeal to some, but for me it simply misses the point of Jesus' message entirely.
